Description
Before the formation of Canada and British Columbia, Indigenous peoples thrived on these lands for thousands of years, living in harmony with the environment. Their deep relationship with the land and water provided all the necessities of life—food, shelter, and medicine—while also fostering cultural practices and community well-being. This interconnectedness reflected a profound respect for the ecosystems that sustained them and a commitment to stewardship of the natural world.
The arrival of colonization disrupted these systems, introducing profound and lasting impacts on Indigenous communities. Policies of displacement, cultural suppression, and systemic discrimination eroded traditional ways of life and contributed to significant health disparities that persist today. Indigenous-specific racism within systems of health care and governance continues to marginalize these communities, undermining their well-being and access to equitable care.
Recognizing the enduring wisdom of Indigenous stewardship is vital to addressing these disparities. Island Health acknowledges the rich history and resilience of the Indigenous peoples who have cared for these lands since time immemorial. With humility, there is a shared responsibility to rebuild relationships, support healing, and prioritize the health of the land and its people. The principle of "Healthy lands, healthy people" guides this ongoing journey toward reconciliation and respect.
